Harmony and Adventure: A Chinese Couple’s Odyssey to Nepal
Nepal—home of towering mountains, vibrant culture, and spiritual renewal-is a country that offers
something for all. For Mei Lin and Li Wei, Shanghai locals, it was no less than fulfilling their wildest of
dreams to venture out on both their common love for adventure and spiritual healing. Their Nepalese
holiday was the complete nine yards of going on an adrenalin-pumping adventure trek to Everest Base
Camp (EBC) and relaxing with healing sound healing sessions in Kathmandu, the capital city afterwards.
The First Step: Kathmandu and Sound Healing
Li Wei and Mei Lin had finally reached the city of Kathmandu, Nepal’s densely populated capital, with awe
and anticipation. To them, the city’s uncontrollable beauty, the congested teeming streets with cars,
bazaars, and ancient temples, were new.
The first place they visited was a sound healing temple popular throughout the world in the middle of
Thamel. There, they had their first session amidst the calming vibration of Tibetan singing bowls. Under
the skilled hands of a veteran healer, the couple was led into profound relaxation. Mei Lin spoke of
“feeling the resonance of peace in every cell.”
They then spent the next two days studying the healing art of sound. They studied how to play the
singing bowls, gongs, and other instruments, and how to balance energy through sound with the ancient
Himalayan technique. Their peaceful initiation before the next physical challenge.
The Journey to Everest Base Camp
Having undergone a religious rebirth in Kathmandu, they now want to experience another once-in-a-
lifetime—Everest Base Camp trek. They managed to get to Lukla and were left awestruck by the scenery
of such gigantic mountains. “It was like living in a new world,” Li Wei said in amazement.
Day 1-4: Acclimatization and Camaraderie
It began in villages and woods. They slept in teahouses and shared stories with other trekkers from the
outside world in the same evening hours. Mei Lin liked talking to locals, hearing their stories, and
consuming Nepali dal bhat—a nutritious but plain meal that was everywhere along the trek.
They had to acclimatize when they went higher. The two took a rest at Namche Bazaar, Sherpas’ working
town, where they shopped and peeked at Everest View Hotel for a glance at the lofty giants. They even
went into the museum there, somewhat wiser about the Sherpa people and their tenacity.
Day 5-8: The Struggle with Altitude
Air thinned and trail steeper with every ascent higher. The test of endurance was the hike from Tengboche
to Dingboche. Mei Lin, a beginner at high-altitude trekking, struggled part of the way, but
encouragement and stunning scenery egging her on.
Reaching Lobuche and finally Gorak Shep, the couple braved freezing temperatures and the physical
strain of trekking at over 5,000 meters. “It was the toughest thing we’ve ever done,” said Li Wei, “but also
the most rewarding.”
Reaching Everest Base Camp
Everest Base Camp arrival was sheer magic. Mei Lin and Li Wei, arm in arm, strode over the highest points
in the world, in awe of the beauty and glory of accomplishment. “It seemed like reaching the sky,” Mei Lin
remembered.
The Return Journey: Appreciation and Reflection
Down from Everest Base Camp, the two were brimming with adrenaline and fatigue. At every step of the
trek, they had been welcomed by Sherpa warmth and simplicity of life at high altitudes. In Lukla, they
were teasing each other about their triumphant trek and their guide and porter in merriment and humor
with steaming hot momo.
Upon returning to Kathmandu, Li Wei and Mei Lin completed their Nepalese experience with their last
sound healing session. The singing bowls sounded even deeper after just having concluded their EBC
physical and spiritual trek. A sweet chord to end their Nepalese experience that had combined physical
adventure with spiritual wellness.
Tips for Couples Traveling in Nepal
1.Acclimatize prior to the trek and never make the error of underestimating acclimatization.
2. Mix Adventure with Rest: Sound healing during trekking provides a balanced experience.
3. Engage with Locals: Nepali hospitality and warmth make the experience always worthwhile.
4. Shop Smart but Pack Light: Layers, trekking shoes, and water bottles for refill are the shopping lists.
5. Be Open-Minded: Nepal’s charm is contrasting—be on the lookout for the cosmopolitan cities and
peaceful mountains.
A Journey Worth Taking
To Mei Lin and Li Wei, Nepal was not a destination, but a journey, not world and self-discovery for them.
By either the universal harmony of sound healing or the accomplishment of being Everest’s shadow, it was
an odyssey of inner harmony resonating outer discovery. And when they were home again, both knew
that they would never be released to be able to forget the memory of Nepal within.
